A SCUNTHORPE-born war hero who was awarded France's top military honour has died at the age of 97 years.Bill Cross was one of 19 Chelsea Pensioners to receive the Legion D'Honneur by the French government in recognition of their bravery during the D-Day Landings.On leaving Scunthorpe, Mr Cross enlisted as a band boy in the Royal Scots Grey Regiment in September 1934 at the age of 16 years.Two years later, he saw action with Glubb Pasha's Arab Legion in Palestine as an armoured fitter.In Syria...
